The Changing Standard of Care

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has recently released new guidelines that signal a significant shift in prenatal care. For nearly a century, the standard prenatal care model involved a fixed schedule of 12-14 in-person visits. However, ACOG’s new guidelines recognize that a "one-size-fits-all" approach doesn't meet the diverse needs of today's pregnant individuals, ACOG is now recommending a more tailored approach. ACOG recommends fewer routine in-person visits for low-risk pregnancies, with the potential for increased use of telemedicine and virtual care options.

Personal Experience

As a registered nurse, technology leader, but also as a mom of three, I can personally attest to the evolving landscape of prenatal care. With my first pregnancy, the routine visits felt necessary, yet sometimes inconvenient amidst work and life. By my third, I found myself wishing for more streamlined communication for routine updates and questions. This move towards fewer in-person visits for low-risk pregnancies resonates deeply with my own experiences. It acknowledges the value of a woman's time and the potential for technology to enhance, not replace, vital care.

Virtual Communication

This shift necessitates a greater reliance on robust and accessible patient messaging systems. These platforms will play a vital role in ongoing communication, facilitating timely information sharing, addressing patient inquiries promptly, and providing crucial support between appointments.

For Limited English Proficiency (LEP) populations, this presents both challenges and opportunities. It's crucial that healthcare providers utilize tools and strategies to effectively communicate with patients who may not be fluent in English.

Path Forward

Jaide Health is at the forefront of this effort. By leveraging AI-powered translation alongside existing communication platforms, we can bridge language barriers and ensure that all pregnant individuals, regardless of their language proficiency, receive the high-quality care they deserve.

Here is a demonstration of Jaide Health being used to support patient messaging:
